Sharon MacPherson grew up on the Isle of Berneray in the Outer Hebrides, a place to which her maternal family originate and to which she has returned to live in recent years. This enduring connection to the island and it’s landscape forms an important thread throughout her work.

Her early practice centred on representational painting and drawing, developing a sensitivity to observation, atmosphere and the expressive possibilities of paint. Over time, Sharon’s work has evolved towards a more intuitive and abstract language, allowing colour, texture and gesture to capture the emotional essence of place.

Wildlife continues to to find its way into her work, often appearing in more expressive or abstracted form. These occasional pieces reflect her fascination with the natural world while allowing the subject to become part of a broader exploration of movement, colour and memory.

The surrounding environment, especially local shorelines, machair and moorland remains MacPherson’s primary source of inspiration, translated through an intuitive and painterly approach to colour, surface and form.
